Switzerland road trip in 3 days

If you came here, I guess you are thinking about doing a road trip in Switzerland. In this blog post you can read about our 3 day road trip itinerary in Switzerland in August, 2020. I also added some other ideas you can choose from. Hopefully you’ll get more luck with weather than we did.

Switzerland

Switzerland (officially the Swiss Confederation) is a federal republic, composed of 26 cantons. It is a landlocked country bordered by Italy, France, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein. It is geographically divided among the Swiss Plateau, the Alps and the Jura (41,285 km2) and land area (39,997 km2). While the Alps occupy the greater part of the territory, the population of approximately 8.5 million is concentrated mostly on the plateau.

1. Day / options: Home – Interlaken

Depending on where you start you can first stop at to swim in Valle Verzasca. We sadly had pouring rain the whole day, so we couldn’t do that. You can make your way to Interlaken as the first stop. Interlaken is a really nice town and you have quite a lot of things to do. Again we wanted to visit Harder Kulm, that offers views on Lake Brienz and Lake Thun, but didn’t manage to do that. We also noticed a lot of offers for paragliding.

2. Day / options Interlaken – Lauterbrunnen – Zürich

On day two you can drive to Lauterbrunnen – the valley of 72 waterfalls. Another option would be visiting Engstligen falls in Adelboden. For us, Lauterbrunnen was nice even in the rain, so definitely recommend it, if bad weather catches you too.

We walked around for a little bit and buyed some stuff. But Lauterbrunen offers a lot: paragliding, hiking paths, Schilthorn viewpoint, Trummelbach Falls

Next stop is Zürich. We were staying in an apartment. If you want to go to the city centre I recommend you to go there with a bus, as you can drive around the city for some time to find any parking space. You can also just drive around with your car if that is your style of exploring a city 🙂 We drove to the centre with the bus and walked on Bahnhofstrasse, to Fraumünster Church in the evening hours, which was quite nice.

3. Day / options: Zürich – Fronalpstock – Lugano

The last day we had more luck – we decided to visit Stoos/Fronalpstock. I have a whole another blog post about this if you are interested. The views here are spectacular and I highly recommend it!

Fronalpstock, Switzerland

Actually at first we wanted to go hiking, we had our eyes on Limmernsee. The difference was that you can reach Stoos by funicular + chair lifts and we didn’t have a lot of time. Limmernsee would just be a more difficult choice – if you like this style, maybe check it out. Both offer amazing views.

Our 3 day road trip in Switzerland ended in Lugano, Monte San Salvatore. I also have a blog post about this here.

Bonus

Please read this article here: https://valerijaklinec.com/best-4-day-europe-trip/. It’s from another 4 day Europe trip and includes Rhine falls – the biggest waterfalls in Europe, situated in Switzerland only 40minutes from Zurich. Add in your itinerary if possible.

Parking in Zurich

There is quite a lot of parking space during the day, but in the evening when people come from work, it will be harder to find a perfect spot. So in the evening I recommend moving around with public transport. As a tourist, you can park within blue parking lines. Usually you’ll see payable parking spaces for only 30min or 2 hours, but you need a card to pay on the parking machines. The best option is to go to a police station as soon as possible and pay 15€ for whole day, so you get as much as possible from this price as you have to move your car away at 8 a.m. (yes, they control you respect this).

In Switzerland you can only buy one year motorway sticker and the cost is 40 CHF. The roads are in almost perfect condition.

Costs

Funiculars and chair lifts are really expensive. You can read more about this in the blog posts I added above.

Food is also expensive, bring some with you if you can.

40 CHF for one year motorway sticker it’s a good deal, even if you stay just for a few days. It’s a pleasure to drive in this country.

15€ for parking till 8 a.m. didn’t sit well with us – it should be valid for 24 hours

McDonald’s is expensive (30€ for 2 menus), but I ate the best McSundae ever! Sooo creamy.

Prices in other restaurants are also expensive – you can easily pay 35 CHF for a meal.

Even in the rain we enjoyed Switzerland so much. I hope I can visit soon and see those Engstligen falls! I just can’t forget them and I am so sad the weather destroyed our plans. In Zürich be sure to try out Zurcher Geschnetzeltes, which is a swiss recipe and comment down below what you think! Sadly we didn’t manage to try it, but hopefully you do.
