Cuba Itinerary

This was our road around Cuba in 2017/18. We landed in Havana, then went to Varadero, Caibarien, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Guillermo, Trinidad, Havana, Vinales and back to Havana to go home. The plan was to stay 3 days at every location (minus Caibarien), but we stayed 2 more days in Cayo Guillermo as it was on the New Year’s Eve.

Read more about the itinerary, costs and food down below.

Itinerary

21. 12. – 22. 12. Havana

  • first we enjoyed a meal on the other side of the road of our apartment (we stayed in ZaZa Hostel, Standard Room, Vedado Center” (Airbnb))
  • that road took us directly to Malecon, where we enjoyed some rum
  • we enjoyed Havana in “slow travel style” – just walking around

22. 12. – 25. 12. Varadero

  • here we stayed in apartment “Varadero Beach. Fully Independent” (Airbnb)” that also had a very good location. If was just a 2min walk to the beach on the other side of the road
  • there were no people around, the sea was extra clean, it had one of the nicest beaches and water we’ve ever seen – can’t recommend more
  • so these 3 days we enjoyed at the beach
  • if you choose to stay in hotels you are probably gonna be on the other side, a little bit forward from here – that part looks more like a resort village where you can find bars with cocktails etc.
  • the “city” has a bigger “shopping centre” (cuban style hehe, don’t expect much)

25. 12. – 27. 12. Caibarien

  • as I said we only stopped here to get to Cayo Guillermo that is 6 hours away
  • we also visited Cayo Santa Maria for few hours – I found Cayo Guillermo nicer
  • after hurricane Irma the place was in a quite bad state so we didn’t find anything interesting to see there, it has a nice centre to walk through and some interesting restaurant

27. 12. – 1. 1. Cayo Guillermo

  • here we enjoyed in a resort, you can read more about it here.

1. 1. – 2. 1. Trinidad

  • when we came we went out and enjoyed in the little village, it has a nice centre and streets
  • in the evening we visited the best club we ever saw: La cueva – it had a really nice music and it’s a must see if you like this style; sadly we had to go early because we had a horse riding reservation. I don’t remember we payed any entrance, but Cubans get drinks for less money. There was actually a guy that offered himself to bring us some drinks
  • the next day we spent our time on horses till 14 and then went back to Havana; ask your host about different offers, usually they have an agreement with someone that offers this type of experiences. The tour we did was quite touristic as you can see – they bring you to Hoyo del Pilon, where you can swim and then go back
  • stayed at “Casa Bernardo Ortiz 1 – Beautiful Room in Center” (Airbnb)

2. 1. – 4. 1. Havana

  • this time we also explored Havana for a little bit: there is a lot of people with old cars that wait for tourist to pay for a drive
  • we wanted to see a cuban cigar factory but it was closed, so we visited Museo del Ron Havana Club

4. 1. – 7. 1. Viñales

  • the cheapest and by far the best of all, had fun, met all the family, played games, the grandmother even roasted coffee at home for us
  • we stayed at “Casa particular en Viñales, Entorno natural”Wi-fi” (Airbnb); it was just a little bit far from the main road, but we went everywhere with bikes
  • on the same road we stopped to see El muro de la prehistoria, a botanic garden (Jardin Botanico de Vinales) and La cueva del indio (there is another one or two but they were farther away)
  • next day we went horse riding again: here it was a little bit slower than in Trinidad

7. 1. – 9. 1. Havana

  • again nothing special, Havana really didn’t impress us that much

Flight

We flied with Turkish Airlines. On the way to Cuba we stopped in Istanbul, on the way back we stopped in Caracas and also Istanbul.
Food was good, but it was the only longer flight for us, so can’t really give an opinion. The food was a little bit stuck on my stomach.

Costs

TAXIS
I would say that the biggest cost was the one for taxis as we didn’t go once with their so called “taxi colectivo” where you can divide the price per person. We just didn’t have the chance as we planned it like we did. For example the road from Varadero to Cayo Guillermo is 6h30min long. That’s why we stayed in Caibarien that is almost 4h away and 3h from there you get to Cayo Guillermo. Hosts and their friends helped us with finding a taxi driver. Sadly, I don’t remember the price, but I think it was at least 200€, so all taxis together, 500-600€+. We will be better at this next time.

Price: 1550€ / 2 = 775€ per person to travel around Cuba for 3 weeks!
+ if we round off the price of taxis to 600€, you get 1.075€ per person.

Food:

Bear in mind that in Cuba there are no shops to buy food to cook at home. In Varadero we found a market by accident, but It seemed like the “once per month/week” type of market (also low hygiene with meat on carton) and a little shop that surprisingly had some chicken. In Havana we found a “supermarket” with pasta, tomato sauce, tuna, detergents, oil and things like that. In Vinales our host cooked for us (5-10€/person – it depended on meal). In all other occasions we had to eat in restaurants or street food (not too much).
